VIAIR 400P Review

Viair 400P Air CompressorThe VIAIR corporation is a company focused on making oil-free air compressors and air accessories. Their products are primarily designed for off-road, on-road, and industrial use. Because we use air compressors to inflate car tires, these machines have become a necessary part of any driver’s emergency kit.

Over the years, manufacturers have created very small and efficient air compressors. These units help prevent accidents caused by under-inflated and flat tires. We have researched and tested out one of these models in our VIAIR 400P review.

We will share the results of our review that will contain the specifications of the said air compressor model, its pros, and cons as well as other useful information for anyone looking for a suitable model.

VIAIR 400P Specifications

This particular model was designed to be very compact and easy to transport. The weight of the unit is just 10.40 lbs. and its dimensions 13 x 11 x 9.5. Because the unit is so small, it can easily fit into its carry bag with all the attachments that come with the compressor.

This machine is powered by a car battery, so all you need to do is attach the 8-foot dual battery clamps and start your engine. The car needs to be running to use this air compressor. Even though this unit is very small, the maximum PSI it can exert is 150.  The airflow of this unit goes up to 1.28 at 90 PSI. This means the compressor can handle inflating most car, van, truck and other tires that are up to 35 inches in size.

The 5-in-1 air hose, that comes with this compressor, is 25 feet long and has a gauge to help monitor inflation. Because the pump is oil-free, not a lot of maintenance is required for this type of a compressor. Additionally, the unit comes with 3 inflation tips for different types of tires.

To make sure the air compressor doesn’t fall during use, the unit also has a heavy-duty sand tray that was made with vibration isolators.

Customer Support and Warranty

VIAIR has dedicated its resources to building a strong relationship with its users. They are a part of various events and regularly post videos from these events. If you have any issues with their products you can call their customer service or live-chat with a representative on their website.

Their phone number and other warranty information can be found in the user manual. This unit is covered by a 1-year limited warranty.

What to Expect from VIAIR 400P

The main purpose of this air compressor is to inflate tires or adjust the air pressure of your tires on the go. Be it on a field or on the side of the road, you can easily set up and use this model for any inflation work. This machine can inflate things in less than 5 minutes which is faster than most other inflators.

This unit’s performance on our tests was very satisfactory. We did find that you need to take a break every 15 minutes or so to let the compressor cool down. This model surely proves useful as a quick and efficient solution when you are on the road.

It could possibly also power some light air tools, but only the ones that work in short bursts. To learn more about this type of air compressors, you can take a look at our handheld air compressor buying guide.

Wrap Up

This unit was designed for tire inflation and it fulfills this role perfectly. Yes, it does cost more than other models in this category, but because it is such a reliable tool, it’s worth its price. Because of the design, the entire kit can be packed and stored neatly in the trunk of your car.

If you are looking for an air compressor to add to your car’s emergency kit, this model is a good choice. In our experience, it will serve the needs of most users, but if you need something a bit cheaper, other solutions for tire inflation might suit you better.

About Jason Parker

Jason Parker learned that being a cyclist doesn’t only mean riding – he decided to build his own workshop for maintenance and fixing. Soon enough, he realized that there is no decent workshop without air tools (of various types). Through research, trial, and error, he decided to gather all his knowledge (so far) into these blogs and guides.
